Maybe voters will eventually realize that change for change's sake, disruption and tearing down the establishment or anyone with experience might feel good on election day but it's what comes next that counts, that unless the electorate can look past the immediate frustration to register a protest vote it's only going to lead to more disappointment...
Maybe there are no historical analogues to what we are witnessing in 2026 because this “reform” era you’ve predicted before is unique and will bring with it unprecedented occurrences, unforetold outcomes. As MAGA disintegrates, the people who comprised it are still enraged at what this country is, and they’re meeting up with the progressives enraged at what this country has become. If all the arrows point in the same direction, even if by the tiniest of margins, watch out.
One question I keep coming back to is whether our challenge is participation or visibility.
People vote, organize, volunteer, and advocate for change. But there is still no simple way to see how public priorities accumulate over time or where broad agreement may already exist.
If voters want institutions to become more responsive, part of the answer may be making shared priorities easier to see in the first place.
I know how I will vote. My vote goes to the candidate who will oppose the Republican War on Science. Who will oppose the RFK Jr anti-vax conspiracy theories. Who will oppose the Trump fight against climate change. Who will oppose the proposed new rules from the OMB about science grants. Who will oppose the nonsense about covid coming from a lab leak. Who will oppose the demonization of pediatricians and other medical doctors. Who will oppose the dramatic budget cuts to the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Who will oppose the attacks on green energy. Who will oppose MAHA. I will vote for science. #standupforscience
